From time to time I get a thought in my head that I want to share with members of the travel agent community. Some of these ideas are be;er than others, and if I do say so myself, now and then I come up with something BRILLIANT. Of course the the defini&on of “brilliant” covers many bases and in fact these ideas may not be “brilliant” at all. Just the same, my ideas will always be ideas.
Find The “Hook”
Yesterday I met a high school buddy and his wife for lunch here in Delray Beach. For Barbara and me the air was a bit chilly but for the two from New Jersey it was delighGul. We chose to dine outside and we were soon greeted by a smiling waitress invi&ng us to sit anywhere.
I said to my friend, “She is from up North based on her accent.” I have an ear for such things as New Jersey “tawk”, Boston’s “cah pahk” and Brooklyneese “yooz guyz.” All are dead giveaways.
When she returned to the table with our menus I asked her if she was from Long Island. “Brooklyn” she quickly responded with another big smile. That is when I hit her with “The Hook.”
“What is the story of the ink behind your ear?” I had spo;ed a small ta;oo
behind her right ear. “That is the sign for Gemini she said, looking a bit embarrassed. I said “Very cool.” She said, “My mother called me a moron having put a ta;oo on my head.” I sincerely said that I liked it. She smiled.
Now that we were all friends the lunch unfolded without hitch. And that is the way things work. Take no/ce. Be interested. Applaud.
Find a hook that will open communica&ons with people and the chances for an amicable rela&onship are enhanced tremendously.
More examples of hooks include any common interests, pets, former jobs, special interests, alma maters, professional sports teams, hobbies, similar jail terms, and the list goes on.
This is my latest thought. I hope it makes sense to you. Seek the hook.
